The First AI Step Seems So Nice

In a few years, you will be giving eyewear either contacts or glasses and ear pieces that are connected to a private artificial intelligence that helps you throughout the day. At first this system is similar to Siri, where it provides you with directions, cooking instructions, a schedule for your day, weather reports, and maybe helps pick out music that you might like. The AI can also, over time, learn more about your daily routine and what you like and dislike so selections become better and it is able to help in more ways.

Because it can see what you are seeing, it can provide an overlay over your eyes to highlight certain areas. This way you can see your messages right in your eyes when you want to see them. Learning piano would be a breeze.

If you are playing, it can help you by putting the music right up there in front of you. No more remembering lyrics!

It can order your groceries for you based upon what you were thinking about having for dinner.

As you workout it could select, no, make music specifically for you to listen to for the start of your workout with pump up music going to your end of the workout where you want more chill, but feel good vibe.

This technology will continue to become more important to you the more you use it.

  • How about being able to bring up jokes while you’re talking so you can be funnier?
  • Giving recommendations for places where you might like to eat? I feel like tacos today, and I see there is a taco stand 4 blocks away.
  • How about reminding you that you have a big meeting today and you should wear nicer clothes?
  • Do math problems for you as you speak the question? For example, the government just gave $300 to every American over the age of 18, how much money was that?
  • How about suggesting flowers for your wife after you had a fight yesterday?
  • How about automatically videoing and photographing parts of your vacation for you?

I’m writing this while I sit on a phone call trying to get an internet/cable bill canceled. Wouldn’t it be cool, if I had an AI agent do this call for me?

And then there is the health monitoring. “I notice your heart rate is higher.” or maybe with added data collection it could monitor electrolytes, sugar levels, and heart pressure.

This could help you be more successful at work. This could help you on dates. This could make your life more enjoyable, make you more money, and give you a better love life.

When does the AI begin and you end? If everything you do and say is suggested or combined with what the AI tells you, who is controlling who? Does it matter? Should you care? If you’re happy, living an enjoyable life, does how you do it matter? If you’re being controlled and manipulated into happiness and long life, should we fight this?

And when does the utopian become distopian? When do you begin to feel that you’re not able to compete without the extra help? Now your date is asking their AI for a good quick come-back for your quick cool joke. And then you’re paying a subscription fee for the AI. And there’s different AI, so which one will be better?

Do schools assume you have AI, so begin to teach you how to use it as if you can already do or have the AI do most math, look up specific facts quickly, or write a 5 page essay in minutes (and then they can correct them as fast)? And then we forget how to do math, and writing and other skills? Would that be so bad? A better skill might be learning how to test whether facts or numbers are correct or real. Does 5430 x 434 equal 45? Does that make sense? Is the capital of Missouri, Kansas City? Does that make sense?

But then again, AI works by looking at what has been done before and looking at what is likely to happen in the future, so it may just begin to re-hash the same old jokes over and over again.
